Background information

Funnel chest repair

Minimally-invasive funnel chest repair

Funnel chest is the most common chest deformity, affecting about one in a thousand persons.  A person with a funnel chest appears to have a symmetric or asymmetric indentation of the sternum. The traditional method of repairing a funnel chest is a complicated and lengthy operation with high blood loss, scar formation and imperfect cosmetic results.  At the Emma Klinik we now offer a new, conservative, minimally-invasive technique that is now becoming increasingly popular all over the world.

Chief consultant:

Dr. med. Onur Tarhan is senior specialist registrar in the Department of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery at the Klinikum Offenbach.

Diagnosis

Funnel chest is normally diagnosed during childhood or adolescence. The deformity occurs three times as often in men and boys as in women and girls and in one third of those affected there is a family history of the condition. The deformity often has severe psychological effects and in some cases can also lead to problems with breathing or other bodily functions.
